What’s on your pizza?

Pizza is my favorite food. And I’m not alone, as millions of people from all over consume this delightful meal daily. Melted cheese on tomato sauce on bread. What’s not to like?

While your basic pizza is pretty simple, the toppings are what make your pizza experience a complex one, full with endless tastes and possibilities. For me, this is one of life’s toughest dilemmas. For beginners, you have your classics – olives, mushrooms, onion, tomato, pepperoni and extra cheese. If you’re in the mood to mix things up, you can take your toppings to the next level by adding an interesting cheese, such as a salty feta or a stinky blue. In the veggie department, next level toppings include corn, jalapeño, artichoke, peppers and broccoli. If that’s not enough for you, you can always toy around with different proteins on your beloved slice, with options such as tuna, anchovy, hard-boiled eggs, sausage and chicken waiting for your eating delight. And if you’re in a true explorer mood, add pineapple to give an interestingly sweet twist to your salty or spicy toppings.

I know, your brain is overwhelmed with all the endless options. And you’re hungry. Me too.

If you’re new to the world of pizza toppings, here’s a quick rundown of how to deal with the stress of making your perfect pizza.

First off, start simple. Don’t try to make crazy mixes or invent new toppings, go with a combo of classic toppings. A nice mushroom-onion or tomato-extra cheese combination is a good starting point. Once you’ve nailed the classics, slowly start to play with more complex tastes and combinations. Add a salty cheese, such as feta. At this point, you’ve probably figured out that a salty cheese is best complemented by olives or mushrooms. If you want to spice things up, jalapeño is the way to go.

After playing with toppings combos that make sense, the ones that their flavors are an obvious match, try to take it to the next level by making new and interesting combinations that entail high risk and reward. These combos are best described by your eyes. At first, you hear about or see something new and you give a crooked look of doubt and uncertainty. Then, you think about it for a second and start to convince yourself, “hey, maybe this could actually work”. After taking a bite or two, your eyes pop open with awe and excitement – “I knew that this would rock!”, you think to yourself. So if you’re in all-out adventure mode, try a cool pepperoni-pineapple combo, or change things up with some eggplant and goat cheese.

Honestly, the possibilities are endless, the different tastes bursting in your mouth will always leave you wanting more and you’ll never be able to try it all… so start your pizza journey today and remember – you are defined by the toppings on your pizza. What’s on yours?
